Pest Control

The problem

Mice were being regularly found within a renowned event catering site. This was despite the best efforts of a well-known Pest Contractor and there being no identifiable pest entry points. Control was becoming expensive, and the event caterers frustrated there had been no improvement.

The solution

Steve attended site to carry out an approval audit for the company to cater for large events at a prestigious London Hotel. During the course of the audit, the problem of the pest issues was discussed. Steve identified that insects trapped on an electric fly killer were mostly night-flying insects. This was unexpected. From this he deduced that a nearby external door was being opened at night by unsupervised catering staff to assist with ventilation in the hot kitchen and also for an illicit cigarette break. The moths had inadvertently revealed the “open door policy” they presented for the mice.

The outcome

Use of the door was prohibited and CCTV installed. Smoking was restricted to working breaks in a designated area (with proper hand-wash facilities). The ventilation was enhanced to improve staff working conditions. The moths got to live another day and the mice had to find another site to banquet. The Caterers saved a load of money and the Pest Contractor recovered his sanity.
